EE Seniors Win 1st & 2nd Place at English and Education Conference 2016
On Wednesday, April 13th, 2016, MIU English Education Department senior students and faculty members attended the English and Education 2016 Conference. This conference was held in Conference Hall of Otgontenger University under cooperation with Embassy of the United States of America and English Language Teachers’ Association of Mongolia.
Around 10 students participated as presenters National University of Mongolia (MOIS), University of Science and technology, Otgontenger University, and MIU. Three MIU senior students (Haenurim Lee, Anna Kosmynina, Khaliun Altansukh) participated as presenters of the conference. Five MIU faculty members (Christine Shin, Carissa Schutz, Hyun Soo Jang, Shinae Lee, Nyamka) also attended as auditors.
As a final result, two MIU students received 1st and 2nd place. Anna Kosmynina won 1st place by presenting her thesis research, “Comparing English Education Curriculums among Universities in Mongolia”. 2nd place went to MIU student Khaliun Altansukh and her research, “Study of Mongolian ESL Learners’ Pragmatic Failure in E-mail Requests”. Congratulations to both winners!
To encourage students’ independent research, MIU EE Department opened a thesis writing course for senior students since last Fall Semester. Through this course, students got the chance to conduct research and further present their findings at an official international conference. Even though it was the first time for EE Department students to present in an official conference, we could definitely see bigger academic potential through this opportunity. Based on this experience, MIU EE Department is planning to attend the English and Education conference annually with students who are writing senior theses.
